If you ignore a small leak in your house it will eventually become a bigger mess. In the same way when we ignore a temptation we find out how aggressively difficult it becomes later on. It began first with drops of evil thoughts and then continues to grow becoming more intense and seducing; slowly convincing the flesh to give in to sin until it does.

Your adversary the devil doesn’t sleep and your flesh is naturally inclined to sin; so don’t try sleeping it through, don’t talk your way out of it; Use instead the Truth of God’s Word but what exactly does the Word of God say about this? Here are some practical biblical truths to avoid falling into temptation:

I. Be Prepared Beforehand: Jesus made it clear in Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” To Watch means to stay alerted. How many of us are unaltered of the enemy’s schemes because we’re to busy on Facebook, YouTube, or playing video games? What this does is fill the mind with vanity and set up our hearts to seek pleasure (Self-seeking heart).

In 2 Chronicles 12:14 it says “And he [the king of Israel] did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the LORD.” If the heart is not being prepared to seek after God then it is being prepared to seek after sin because if we’re not preparing our heart to seek God then we will do evil as the verse implies. So deny self, pick up your cross and obey God’s commands and you’ll be preparing your heart after God.

II. Cry out to God: I know by experience that when I am in this type of situation I would cry out to God and He would Deliver me. “I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me..” (psalm 118:5) God will deliver those who put their trust in Him. Psalm 50:15 says “call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”

III. Suffer Patiently Through as you wait for God: Quite hard to say but “it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.” (1 Peter 3:17). At times this will be the case but know that if you are prepared beforehand than you will be able to resist and suffer patiently through the trial or temptation. Not very popular to say but is nonetheless what Jesus Christ spoke in His word would happen if we decide to follow Him (Luke 9:23 , 1 Peter 4:1).

Besides all this, remember always to carry in your heart God’s Word, using it against the devil’s lies but not in your own strength but by the Spirit of God through praise in the day of trouble, through prayer and obedience. If you are struggling with sin in any area of your life continue to pray over it, cooperating with God that He may fix and close that leakage. Don’t allow it to keep making a mess in your life. “He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)
